How to Get Your Truck Licence in NSW – Step-by-Step Guide

by webmaster / Thursday, 17 July 2025 / Published in Uncategorized
A happy male student giving a thumbs up after successfully completing his plant training with Ultimate Driving School in Sydney.

Are you ready to take the next step in your driving career? Whether you’re aiming to become a professional driver or upgrade your current licence, getting a truck licence in NSW opens the door to exciting job opportunities and a stable career path.

At Ultimate Driving School, we make the process smooth and stress-free. Here’s your step-by-step guide to getting a truck licence in NSW.

Step 1: Choose the Right Truck Licence Class

Truck licences in New South Wales are categorised by the size and type of vehicle you want to drive. The most common licence classes include:

  • LR (Light Rigid): For small trucks or buses with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes but not exceeding 8 tonnes.
  • MR (Medium Rigid): For two-axle trucks and buses over 8 tonnes.
  • HR (Heavy Rigid): For vehicles with three or more axles and over 8 tonnes.
  • HC (Heavy Combination): For articulated vehicles like a prime mover with a semi-trailer.
  • MC (Multi Combination): For B-doubles and road trains (requires experience with HC).

👉 Not sure which licence is right for you? Contact our team – we’ll help you choose the right path.

Step 2: Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet these requirements:

  • Hold a current NSW driver licence (Class C)
  • Meet minimum licence experience requirements:
    • LR/MR: Held your Class C licence for at least 1 year.
    • HR: Held your Class C licence for at least 2 years.
    • HC: Held your MR or HR licence for at least 1 year.
    • MC: Held your HC licence for at least 1 year.
  • Pass a medical assessment (for classes MR and above)
  • Have a clean driving history without suspensions or disqualifications

Step 3: Book Your Truck Training Course

Enrol with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) like Ultimate Driving School. We offer high-quality truck licence training across all classes, with expert instructors, modern vehicles, and flexible schedules.

Step 4: Pass the Knowledge Test

Before your practical training, you’ll need to pass a truck knowledge test at a Service NSW centre. This covers rules and regulations specific to heavy vehicles.

To prepare:

  • Study the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook
  • Take online practice tests
  • Ask your instructor for support and resources

Once passed, you’ll receive a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) logbook to track your progress.

Step 5: Complete Practical Truck Training

Your practical lessons will be conducted in real trucks on various roads and driving conditions. You’ll learn to:

  • Control the vehicle safely and confidently
  • Reverse, turn, and brake effectively
  • Secure and manage loads
  • Apply defensive driving techniques

At Ultimate Driving School, we tailor lessons to your experience and career goals.

Step 6: Pass the Driving Assessment

Your final driving assessment will be conducted by an accredited RMS assessor. You’ll be evaluated on:

  • Pre-drive checks and vehicle inspection
  • Driving skills and safety awareness
  • Road rule compliance
  • Control in various conditions

After passing, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency.

Step 7: Apply for Your Truck Licence

Visit a Service NSW centre with your documents:

  • Certificate of Competency
  • ID and completed application forms
  • Medical certificate (if applicable)
  • Payment for licence fees

You’ll walk out with your new truck licence – ready to hit the road!
